Monkey Bizness shares some concern with the usage of the phrase “giving them enough rope to hang themselves with” in commentary. He has 3 main issues with the usage of this phrase:
- The depiction of suicide in graphic wording.
- The false portrayal of the player’s intent.
- The lack of information given from the phrase.

Personally, I don’t agree fully with premise #2 in that sometimes commentators phrase the saying in a way that does illustrate players unintentionally helping their opponent. Premises #1 and #3 I do agree with in that other phrases can be used to still illustrate the point being made and it isn’t always informative. A big example is the unanimous change of the older usage of “playing gay” with the now “playing lame” to denote a defensive style of play. Commentary def has room for continual improvement and essays like this def help to refine the craft.
