A recent GoFundMe campaign organized by Chris Cotty has raised over $27,000 to save Dunellen, NJ arcade “8 on the Break“. The local gaming hotspot faced severe tax bills after state mandates forced it to close during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As I am sure you all know, we have been closed since March 15th.” wrote Cotty. “The break has been in existence since 1973, and has never faced anything like this.” The arcade was unable to pay 2019 tax bills due to the loss of revenue, and reached out to patrons to help lessen the impact and avoid losing the Break altogether.
The response was overwhelming, and the campaign met its $22,500 goal in only around 7 hours. “I cant thank everyone enough,” Cotty said in response to the campaign’s success. “At this rate, I may be able to pay the whole tax bill. That would be amazing.”
As of this writing, New Jersey still faces lockdowns and the Break remains closed for the time being. In the campaign pitch, Cotty suggested offering patrons that donated over $50 a free night of games and food once the Break reopened. Until that day, it seems local patrons (and the arcade’s owners) can breathe a little easier.
