Covid-19 risk is timing out SamSho and KOF XIV competitors
By on February 24, 2020

The SNK World Championship has been postponed to a later date due to concerns over the Covid-19 a.k.a. Corona Virus.

The SNK World Championship is the first official tournament series hosted by SNK Corporation. The best players of Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters XIV are slated to match up to see who is the strongest in their respective fighting game. The finals for this series was scheduled for the weekend of February 29th, 2020 but is now rescheduled for March 28-29, 2020 to mitigate the risk of Covid-19 infection.

SNK’s official statement is as follows:

SNK CORPORATION (Corporate HQ: Suita-city, Osaka, Japan, Company President & CEO: Koichi Toyama) regrets to announce that、due to the rising spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19), the eSports event “SNK World Championship GRAND FINAL” as well as the “SNK World Championship JAPAN TOUR FINAL” will unfortunately have to be postponed.

The purpose of these events is to decide the world’s top players in both SAMURAI SHODOWN and THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIV. Qualifier events around the world started in October 2019, and the final Japanese qualifier event (SNK World Championship JAPAN TOUR FINAL) was to take place Feb 29th-Mar 1st, with all the qualifiers from around the world gathering together to duke it out at the SNK World Championship GRAND FINAL scheduled to take place March 28th -29th.

However unfortunately due to rising cases of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) appearing across the globe, for the safety of both the competitors and staff, we have made the difficult decision to postpone these events until further notice.

Updates concerning changed dates will be provided once the situation improves.

We understand that many people involved with this event, including the many fans out there feel let down. It is truly an unfortunate thing to happen, but we wish for your understanding and patience as we wait for this virus to clear up.

It’s sad to hear that the tournament schedule is being affected, but great on SNK for putting the health of their players above the competition.
