EVO Online Featured Game Primer: Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath

By on May 21, 2020

To help you get up to speed with the latest news about this summer’s online Evolution Championship Series, we’re doing a series of posts on each of the four open-bracket games. In this post: Them’s Fightin’ Herds.

Mortal Kombat is a name that rings far and wide in all of popular culture. Whether people remember doing their first fatality with Scorpion hitting up up punch or humming the theme song of the MK movie, the legacy of this title runs deep. The 11th Mortal Kombat does not disappoint in carrying on this legacy.

The first thing people typically see of this title is the jaw dropping visuals. The game’s hyper realistic graphics and signature over the top gore . The visuals aren’t the only thing keeping this title together. Under the hood is a great fighting game with wild mechanics that allows players to a ton of freedom to express their fighting prowess. Each character in the game can choose between 3 tournament approved variations and systems like Krushing Blow has players work toward landing devastating combos to end their opponents.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is an expansion of the original MK11 in content and characters. The story continues from 11 and has Raiden reluctantly make an alliance with Shang Tsung to get a magical macguffin that will help them reboot their timeline. The update will also come with 2 returning characters, Fujin and Sheeva, and the guest character, Robocop. Along with this will come with Friendships and stage fatalities that hearken back to past MK games. We’ll have to wait until May 26, 2020 to get our hands on these characters and see the conclusion of the 11th Mortal Kombat.

The decision to include Mortal Kombat 11 is of course a testament to the strength of its roll back style netcode. This is the common denominator of all the four games selected as open tournaments to ensure the competitive integrity of the competition.

The competitive MK community was just finishing their last tour at the start of the pandemic in March of 2020. Final Kombat had 16 players duke it out .It came down to the still current top two players, SonicFox and Ninjakilla. SonicFox came up to Grand Finals in the losers bracket but clutched it out with a total score of 6 to 2 to take the world championship.

Although Ninjakilla couldn’t win it at Final Kombat, he is always close on SonicFox’s tail as recent exhibition matches between them has seen Ninjakilla as the dominant force. Will we see a possible repeat win by SonicFox or will Ninjakilla clutch it out to take his first Evo title? Tune in to EVO Online to find out.
